白露 (White Dew)
"White Dew" is the 15th of the 24 solar terms on the traditional Chinese calendar and the third of autumn. It falls each year around September 7-9 on the Gregorian calender and marks a clear rise in coolness in the natural world. During this period, the days can still feel warm under the sun, but temperatures drop quickly after dusk, the day-night temperature gap widens, and morning dew becomes more frequent.
白露茶 (White Dew Tea)
"White Dew Tea" refers to teas picked and processed from White Dew through the Autumn Equinox, and it shows the classic characteristics of autumn teas. After enduring the summer heat, tea plants enter an ideal growth phase around White Dew. Mid-autumn sunlight is bright bu no longer scorching, allowing photosynthesis to proceed effeciently and letting the leaves accumulate abundant compounds. At night, as temperatures quietly fall, plant respiration slows, so fewer of those compounds are consumed. The result is tea leaves richer in internal substances, with elevated sweetness and fuller, more expressive aromatics.
The Artwork: 群鸟养羞 (Flocks of Birds Storing Delicacies)
Name of the artwork "群鸟养羞" literally means "flocks of birds storing delicacies". It reflects a classical Chinese habit of watching nature closely. Through observation, people in ancient China concluded that birds often store food for the coming winter around White Dew. Interestingly, as birds stock up for winter, people also begin the year's final tea-picking season at White Dew, almost like storing tea for winter too.
The cover artwork is designed by our incredibly talented and creative artist friend, Miron Milic. It shows two magnificent Chinese rosefinches at dawn, collecting millet on dew-laden leaves. They are storing up the fine food for the coming winter.
