The Only Square-Pressed Oolong Tea

Among thousands of oolongs, only Zhang Ping Shui Xian is pressed into compact tea bricks. Its cute shape earned it the nickname “Creamy Cube.”

But why press it into squares?

Originally, this tea had loose, fluffy leaves. They were hard to carry and easily absorbed moisture, which spoiled the tea. To solve this, tea makers started hand-pressing the leaves into little balls wrapped in paper. But these handmade balls varied in size, making sales difficult.

Then in 1914, a tea maker named Deng Guanjin from Shuang Yang Zhong Village created a breakthrough. He invented a special pressing method using wooden molds. This formed the tea into neat, identical squares.

The Zhang Ping Museum records: "Shuang Yang Zhong Village is the birthplace of Shui Xian tea bricks... Deng Guanjin created the world’s only square tea bricks with great color, scent and taste in 1914."

Since then, Zhang Ping Shui Xian became truly unique among oolongs. Its classic "Creamy Cube" shape stands alone, a tea masterpiece in square form!
