Does “Rock” in Rock Oolong mean actual rocks?

When we talk about “rock tea" or “rock oolong," does that mean there are actual pieces of stone in your tea cup? Of course not! Tea plants couldn't grow from solid rocks alone. So where does this rocky name come from?

The answer lies in the incredible landscape of Wuyi Mountain, where this special tea grows. There is a unique landscape called “Danxia". Wind and rain gradually transformed the rocky cliffs into soil across thousands of years. This soil contains abundant minerals derived from mountain rocks and features numerous tiny air pockets.

This special rocky soil is perfect for growing great tea for three key reasons. First, it's rich in minerals that tea plants love. Second, all those little air spaces let water drain away quickly. In fact, tea roots hate sitting in soggy ground! Third, the rocky terrain creates cool mists and humid air.

Because the plants work harder to grow in this rocky ground, they develop deeper, more interesting flavors. That's why rock oolong teas often taste more complex than teas grown in plain, soft soil, sometimes mineral-like, sometimes fruity or floral.

The name “rock tea" is really a big compliment. It tells you the tea comes from this prized rocky environment. It’s about the special place, not literal rocks. So next time you sip a Rock Oolong, remember: it’s not made from rocks, but made special by the rocks! That "rock" isn't something crunchy in your tea leaves, instead, it is nature’s way of creating really, really good dirt for amazing flavor.

Da Hong Pao / Big Red Robe - 大红袍 (5g*1 packet)
When you ask a native of Wuyi Mountain, they will tell you that Da Hong Pao stands as the most famous rock oolong tea without exception. This tea exhibits a bold flavor profile that delivers multiple rich layers of taste. The rich roasted aroma stands out as its most notable feature. The tea presents smooth flavors with caramel tones and chocolate layers plus a hint of mineral finish.

Ancient Tree Shui Xian - 60 years - 老枞水仙 (5g*1 packet)
Our Ancient Tree Shui Xian rock tea comes from tea trees that are 60 years old. The tea offers a robust smooth taste infused with mineral notes that leads to a lasting aftertaste. The woody taste of this tea blends well with caramel notes which perfectly pair with tasty snacks during your daily tea time.

Rou Gui / Cinnamon - 肉桂 (5g*1 packet)
Rou Gui rock tea shares the general look of northern Fujian Oolongs but has its own character. The leaves are neatly rolled, brown in color, shiny and rich-looking. When dry, it smells noticeably fragrant. After brewing it releases a distinctive and delicate cinnamon aroma which stays in the air for an extended period. The flavor offers a rich sweetness while the bright orange-yellow liquid appears clear and visually appealing. It feels smooth and satisfying to drink. Besides, the lingering fruity sweetness can make you feel like you're strolling through an orchard.

Golden-edged Qi Lan - 金边奇兰 (5g*1 packet)
“Qi Lan”, meaning "Wonderful Orchid," is a rare and special rock tea from Wuyi Mountain. The term Golden-edged Qi Lan reflects the subtle golden hue that appears around the edges of its tea leaves. The aroma combines unique orchid notes with roasted elements and subtle fruit and floral scents. The multiple taste layers generate an enduring flavor experience. When brewed the tea displays a transparent apricot-yellow hue. The tea offers a refined taste that flows smoothly and refreshes you with a sweet clean finish.

Yellow Rose / Huang Mei Gui - 黄玫瑰 (5g*1 packet)
Yellow Rose rock tea, the name itself says it all. This tea is known for its unique, lasting scent of dried roses. Its flavor is rich and pleasantly sweet, never murky, but clear and smooth. This rock tea does not have the bold taste of Da Hong Pao nor the mellow liquor of Shui Xian but delivers refreshing sweetness. It combines woody and fruity characteristics with a fresh bright sensation which sets it apart as a distinctive Wuyi Rock Oolong style.

Rock Cream / Stone Milk - 石乳 (5g*1 packet)
Rock Cream, or so-called Stone Milk rock tea, is one of Wuyi Mountain's famous tea bushes. Its name "rock's milk" indicates the distinctive aroma which inspired its naming. The tea has a delightful combination of creamy and fruity flavors along with smooth texture and natural sweetness. The perfect roasting skills of our uncle take the flavor to another level. The hint of caramel mixed with the creamy taste is so delicious, it might make you forget it's just tea!

Iron Arhat - 铁罗汉 (5g*1 packet)
Iron Arhat rock tea is one of the four Famous Bushes and it is sourced from “Hui Yuan Rock”, which is one of the famous rock areas in Wuyi Mountain. One of the core characteristics is its rocky flavor, which is a unique flavor given by the rocky and mineral soil unique to Wuyi Mountain. This rocky flavor makes the tea soup taste deep and heavy, with a hint of “Chinese medicine flavor” or “Chinese herbs”, which is a flavor that is difficult to be replicated by teas from other places.

Bai Rui Xiang / Winter Daphne - 百瑞香 (5g*1 packet)
Bai Rui Xiang rock tea possesses a remarkable aroma that combines floral and fruity elements with subtle honey-like undertones. It probably reminds you of berries and orchid flowers. The tea's scent departs from the intense roasted quality found in traditional rock tea, because it offers freshness, sweetness and exaltation, giving you a gentle and elegant feeling.
