Everything about Rou Gui Rock Oolong

Rou Gui simply means “Cinnamon." The tea received its name because its brew releases a baked cinnamon scent. Rou Gui currently stands as one of the most commonly cultivated tea trees in Wuyi Mountain.

Rou Gui tea bushes have a history of
over 100 years.
They were first discovered on Mazhen Peak in Wuyi Mountain. Since Rou Gui is a bush-type tree that grows new plants from cuttings, its life is shorter than other tea trees, usually 30-40 years. Because of this, tea farmers didn’t want to plant it at first.

Everything changed in 1985. That year, Fujian Province’s Crop Committee officially recognized Rou Gui as a special tea variety. This started its large-scale planting. Today, Rou Gui has become one of the most famous Wuyi Rock Oolongs.

A Qing Dynasty poet once created a poem that expressed admiration for this rock oolong:

“Nature keeps true flavors in rare teas,

Papaya’s richness meets cinnamon’s warm spice.

When will we sing of new wonders?

Rain-fresh buds and ice-pure shoots take their turn."

Rou Gui rock tea shares the general look of northern Fujian Oolongs but has its own character. The leaves are neatly rolled, brown in color, shiny and rich-looking. When dry, it smells noticeably fragrant. After brewing it releases a distinctive and delicate cinnamon aroma which stays in the air for an extended period. The flavor offers a rich sweetness while the bright orange-yellow liquid appears clear and visually appealing. It feels smooth and satisfying to drink. Besides, the lingering fruity sweetness can make you feel like you're strolling through an orchard.
