The King of White Peony Tea

King Peony (Mu Dan Wang) is the name given to the highest grade, finest quality White Peony (Bai Mu Dan) tea.

King Peony looks very distinctive. Generally, it is made from one bud with only one leaf, or sometimes one bud with two very small, under-developed leaves (the second one is tiny, a little shell). The bud is short and plump, heavily covered in white fuzz (bai hao). The leaf is small and round, with a soft grey-green color. The underside of the leaf is heavily covered in white fuzz as well, and the stem is very short and thin.

Drinking Peony King is a light but profound experience. It is full of the fresh, mild fragrance of the white fuzz (hao xiang). The brewed tea is crystal clear and pale, as if it holds the true essence of Fuding’s mountains, the very soul of the high forests.

A slight young wood taste, the pure flavor of the mountain grasses, the scent of rocky soil.

Sometimes, it even seems like the tea has droplets of dew from an early August morning – round, full, shining.
Imagine those droplets sliding off grass tips before they disappear into the soil. The tea flows through your throat with the smoothness of silk when you drink it. It feels unbelievably soft, almost weightless, but leaves a beautiful lingering scent in your mouth.

Though also made mostly from one bud with one leaf (and sometimes one bud with two leaves), its buds are fresher and more tender. Plus, it’s picked even earlier in spring than regular White Peony tea. The tea feels fresh and gentle on the palate. It delivers a sweet flavor with smoothness and richness combined with a silky texture. The sweet aftertaste stays light and the fragrance remains present in your throat. This tea shares creamy and fruity notes with White Peony yet delivers a stronger floral aroma.
