Green tea and Oolong tea are best enjoyed within a 2-year period.

White tea is an exception. Its internal compounds evolve over time, enhancing its fragrance and creating a deeper, mellower taste. Therefore, it does not have a specific optimal drinking period.

What are the “roots” of Rooteas?

Rooteas tea making skills

Family-made

Our teas all come from tea-making families. Some are made by our own family, and others are crafted by families we've known and trusted for years. Not from an unknown source, but from real people and family producers whose craft we trust and have seen in person.

Single-origin

It means you can actually taste where the tea comes from. It stays true to its own place, so the local soil, rocks, and climate all come through in the cup. With Wuyi rock oolong, you get that clear rock rhythm (Yan Yun) and a deep, lingering fragrance that only those rocky slopes can give. When you drink it, you're not just having a cup of tea, you're getting a small snapshot of that landscape.

We like to keep things honest and simple. When we share a tea, we share all the detailed information too, so you always know what you're drinking. We'd love to be the trusted tea partner you can turn to.

  • Name: Oriental Beauty Oolong - 东方美人
  • Type: Taiwan Oolong Tea
  • Origin: Xinzhu County, Taiwan
  • Harvest Time: Spring, 2025
  • Producer: Zhao Family
  • Tasting note: Nectar, Rose, Ripe fruit, Honey-like sweetness, a touch of citrus, subtle fruity finish

The distinctive nature of Oriental Beauty tea comes from its unique production process. During its growth phase, the tea leaves require the bites from small insects known as green leafhoppers. The act of insect bites causes their saliva to combine with the tea's natural liquids. This natural process leads to tea that exhibits rich fruit and honey flavors with caramel undertones. People frequently refer to this tea as the “Champagne of Oolongs". And the tea soup shows a bright amber-orange shade similar to the rosy cheeks of a beautiful woman. It has a strong, sweet scent like flowers and honey. The flavor presents smoothness combined with mellowness while remaining completely free from bitterness and ending with a delightful lasting sweetness.

The Miracle of an Insect Bite

Oriental beauty oolong tea leaves and tiny insect

When people first hear what makes Oriental Beauty tea special, that it's been bitten by bugs, they often imagine something scary.

Actually, the bugs are called Green Leafhoppers. These creatures appear completely safe and they might even seem somewhat adorable.

Green Leafhoppers are tiny green insects. They are very small, only about 1 millimeter long. On a tea leaf, you might just see little, almost see-through dots hopping around.

Although the bitten tea leaves stop growing, the plant doesn't just give up. It goes into defense mode. It releases fragrant substances, like jasmine acid, which acts like a signal. This signal attracts helpful insects, like small wasps, to come and eat the Green Leafhoppers.

The Green Leafhoppers' saliva mixes with substances released by the damaged leaf. When this leaf is processed into tea, it creates a unique honey-like sweetness. The more bites the leaf has, the richer the flavor of the final tea becomes.

Even so, the Green Leafhopper is still a pest. Tea bushes that are badly bitten become unhealthy.

Because the Green Leafhoppers must thrive to make this tea, absolutely no pesticides can be used. After the leafhoppers damage the bushes, the tea yield plummets. It often drops to only half of the normal amount. In severe cases, it can be as low as one-tenth!

The peak time for Green Leafhoppers is the ten days before and after the Dragon Boat Festival (around early summer). Since making Oriental Beauty tea relies on these pests, the tea is only harvested during the summer. This harvest season is very short. Because of this low yield, the tea is rare and a precious treasure.
