Fuzhou Jasmine Tea

Fuzhou Jasmine Tea is a popular variety of scented tea. The tradition of creating this reprocessed tea began during the Han Dynasty period which existed more than 2,000 years ago.

The distinctive Fuzhou scenting method involves mixing green tea leaves together with fresh jasmine flowers. The tea takes on the flower's aroma through an intricate sequence of processing steps. Finally, the flowers are removed.

Why is Jasmine Tea so fragrant?
The scenting process explains why jasmine tea has such a strong fragrance. Fresh flowers are combined with tea leaves during this process. Tea leaves absorb the flower's fragrance as they rest together. Afterward they pluck the flowers and proceed to dry the tea. This creates scented tea.

How it works (The Basic Idea)?

1.Flowers Release Scent:

The flowers naturally give off their fragrance.

2.Tea Leaves Absorb Scent:

Tea leaves can naturally absorb both odor and humidity from their surroundings. That is due to their natural structure - the microscopic holes. These holes allow them to absorb moisture and scents from surrounding air. When scenting, water helps carry the fragrance. The tea leaves absorb both the flower fragrance and moisture during scenting.

Which Flowers Can Be Used?
Any flower that releases a pure strong pleasant scent can be used to flavor tea. Popular options for scented tea flowers are jasmine, magnolia, pomelo, osmanthus, aglaia and rose.

Why Jasmine Tea is Special?

The fresh aroma of Jasmine tea creates an aromatic and mellow taste that refreshes the palate. But more importantly, drinking this tea results in an invigorating sensation and elevates mood which other floral teas fail to achieve. The exceptional characteristic of Jasmine Tea allows it to be known as the “King of Flower Teas."

Fuzhou city in Fujian serves as the birthplace of jasmine tea which has a production history that spans nearly a millennium (Click here to learn about the story of the oolong tea making family). During the making of Fuzhou jasmine tea producers scent processed tea leaves using fresh buds from jasmine plants that are about to blossom. We want to share two classic Fuzhou jasmine teas in the Jasmine Tea Sampler Box, both made with a green tea base: Jasmine Snowflakes & Jasmine Dragon Pearls

Jasmine Snowflakes - 茉莉飞雪 (5g*5 packets)
Times of scenting process: 5 times
The moment you open the packaging your senses will be captivated by the strong scent of jasmine flowers mingled with tea leaves. Craftsmen produce this tea by rolling one bud and one leaf together and infusing them with the aroma of freshly picked jasmine blossoms. The jasmine fragrance rises from the tea soup during steeping while the leaves move elegantly through the cup. The jasmine petals gradually float to the surface, becoming translucent like melting snow.

Jasmine Dragon Pearl - 茉莉龙珠 (5g*5 packets)
Times of scenting process: 5 times
The rolled leaves of this tea resemble small pearls which inspired its name "Dragon Pearl." The complex rolling method allows the tea leaves to maintain their complete taste and scent during brewing. The budding jasmine flowers used for scenting the tea leaves are removed to allow the process to be repeated multiple times. Eventually, the scenting process helps to enhance the aroma while preserving the tea's freshness and richness.
